Study in the Effectiveness of Detoxification Foot Patches

Published in The Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine, Volume 20 Fourth Quarter, 2005 Number 4.

Abstract:

A small study of commercially available Detoxification Foot Patches was undertaken to determine if there is evidence of heavy metal detoxification after using the foot patches as instructed by the manufacturer. Three foot patches were used in the experiment: an unused “virgin” foot patch as a control, one that was used by Patient A who’s mineral status showed no heavy metal poisoning, and another used by Patient B, who’s mineral status showed contamination with several heavy metals. Patient A’s and B’s mineral status was determined by Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis [HTMA] testing at Anamol Laboratories in Concorde, Ontario. Anamol Laboratories also did the mineral analysis of the foot patches. Mineral analysis of these foot patches ascertained there was no evidence of any detoxification of heavy metals. More importantly, the experiment revealed the control foot patch contained toxic levels of six heavy metals. For this reason, employing them as a therapeutic method of detoxification may contribute to toxic exposures of heavy metals they are purposed to be detoxifying. (more…)

What is Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis?

HAIR TISSUE MINERAL ANALYSIS is a soft tissue mineral biopsy (hair is classified as a soft tissue of the body). A biopsy is an analysis of a body tissue, in this case, to detect mineral levels.

Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis:

  • provides information about mineral concentrations at the cellular level
  • tells you what nutrients and/or toxic metals have been stored in your tissues over time
  • provides information about chronic exposure to toxins
  • tells how your body utilized the nutrient minerals and trace elements of your diet and whether your intake caused sufficient or excess tissue storage
  • measures pollutants such as Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, Aluminum and Arsenic

By following up on this information, a valuable biochemical picture reveals what is happening “behind the scene”, so to speak, & provides a useful guide to early treatment. This is especially important when heavy metal poisoning is indicated and helps monitor an individual’s progress.

  • The body is able to produce most needed vitamins
  • All minerals must be supplied either in food or from supplements
  • The concentration in hair of minerals can be OVER 100 times that of the blood
  • Hair, a living biopsy specimen, represents the intracellular deposition of minerals
  • There are at least 96 times more minerals by weight in our body than vitamins
  • Obtaining a hair sample and analyzing it, is relatively inexpensive and biologically stable
  • Abnormal levels of essential minerals may seriously affect neuroendocrine function and body metabolism

Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis can help take the guesswork out of diet and nutritional supplement recommendations.

Toxins, Detoxification & Explanation of Hepatic Detoxification Mechanisms

Toxins

A toxin is defined as any compound that has a detrimental effect on cell function or structure; some cause minimal negative effects while others can be fatal.

Toxic substances are everywhere — in the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the water we drink. Even our bodies and the bacteria in our intestines produce toxic substances.

Toxins damage the body in an insidious and cumulative way. Once the detoxification system becomes overloaded, toxic metabolites [products of metabolism] accumulate, and we become progressively more sensitive to other chemicals, some of which are not normally toxic. This accumulation of toxins can wreak havoc on our normal metabolic processes.

Nutrients for Specific Health Conditions

Holistic physicians recognize that nearly all chronic illnesses, both physiological and psychological, can be improved once patients upgrade to a healthier diet and receive nutrient supplies adequate to their needs. They also employ diet and nutrition preventively, both to ensure against disease, and to help their patients achieve optimal health. Thousands of scientific studies support the use of nutrients for achieving and maintaining health. “The rationale for using nutritional medicine extends beyond the rather obvious fact that refined, processed foods grown on depleted soil are low in vitamins and minerals,” nutritional authority Alan Gaby, M.D. says. “Even people who consume the most nutritious diets, particularly people suffering from illness, can often benefit from nutritional medicine.”

Sluggish or Toxic Liver

A liver that is malfunctioning and toxic compromises and reduces the efficiency of detoxification and its other functions.  In particular:

  1. The liver performs every possible permutation of biological oxidation and ATP formation.  It breaks down and builds up glycogen, fats and protein, and can form glucose from other fuel stores.  Compromising this function will result in fatigue, and shortages or excesses of various fuels.  The ability of the liver to fine-tune the body to meet its requirements will be lost.
  2. The liver responds to pancreatic insulin and glucagon to control blood glucose within a normal set range.  A toxic liver typically starts to respond sluggishly to pancreatic signals, and so hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia and general blood sugar instability result.
  3. Many pathways of the liver are affected - including the formation of blood lipoproteins [LDL, VLDL, HDL]; blood proteins like albumen and fibrinogen; the many blood carrier proteins, active vitamin D and so on.  This affects many functions like calcium absorption, bone density, water balance, clotting and free versus bound ratios of minerals and hormones circulating in the blood.
  4. The liver is the primary excretory organ for many of the hormones, including thyroid and steroid hormones.  It conjugates these hormones, and secretes them with the bile into the duodenum, from where they are eliminated from the body.  Hormonal imbalances result if the liver stops doing this effectively.
  5. If the liver is unable to detoxify absorbed toxic products from the gut, or those circulating in the blood, it can secrete them in an active form along with bile into the common hepatic duct.  They accumulate in the gallbladder, irritating and possibly inflaming this organ.
  6. The liver eliminates many drugs from the body.  A reduced efficiency will affect drug dosages, and lead to prolonged drug half-lives.  This has relevance particularly when anesthetics are administered.
  7. The liver conjugates and excretes bilirubin.  A compromised liver may not maintain an efficient process of taking bilirubin out of circulation, and unconjugated bilirubin may rise, burdening the kidneys to excrete it instead.  This would make the urine dark, and people with toxic livers often have dark urine, especially first thing in the morning.
  8. The liver has macrophagic kuppfer cells, and is part of the reticulo-endothelial system that contributes to immunity.  A compromised liver therefore also impacts the immune system.

Essential Nutrient Information

Nutrients are chemical substances contained in food that are necessary to maintain life and allow growth and reproduction. They provide energy, contribute to structure, and regulate biochemical processes. To date, over 60 nutrients are considered essential to human life.

Essential nutrients are those substances necessary to support life that must be supplied in the diet because they either cannot be made by the body or cannot be made in large enough quantities to meet needs.

Chemically, there are six classes of nutrients: carbohydrates, lipids, proteins (amino acids), water, vitamins and minerals. Carbohydrates, lipids and amino acids provide energy to the body and thus are referred to as energy-containing nutrients. Along with water, they constitute the major portion of most foods. They are referred to as macronutrients.

“Let Thy Food Be Thy Medicine”

Numerous studies have indicated that American and Canadian diets are not supplying the required vitamins and minerals, even at low Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) levels.

Prior to 1860, most coarse flour was stone ground. About that time steel roller mills were introduced to make the very finely processed white flour we are so used to. This process completely removed the germ and fibre (that was then fed to farm animals!). Bakers loved the new product because the flour did not go rancid. Consumers enjoyed the resulting light, fluffy bread and the many white flour based “ goodies. ”
